Here are just a few ways the Bicycle® brand team and the United States Playing Card Company take part in sustainable efforts every day.
While you may already be familiar with the Eco Edition Deck, that’s not the end of our eco-friendliness. The Eco Edition Deck is more of a celebration of what we do with every deck: print with vegetable ink on sustainably-harvested paper. The cards are so non-toxic you could technically eat them (not that we recommend you try). But when you do need to finally retire or throw away an old deck, you can recycle it just like regular paper products.
Printing cards does take a lot of paper. If you’ve ever seen an uncut sheet, you know there are leftover pieces that don’t make it to the final deck. Add up the 220,000 decks we print each day, and that’s a lot of paper scrap. So instead of throwing it in a landfill, we shred it, bale it, and send it off to get turned into tissues or toilet paper.
And since the playing card manufacturing area needs to be kept at a certain temperature and humidity level, we partition it off so that the entire warehouse space isn’t forced to operate at that level. We conserve energy every day using this partition method.
These small steps are making a big impact; in fact, the state of Kentucky has awarded us twice for our efforts. The United States Playing Card Company has the power to make a big environmental impact, so we choose to make that impact positive. You can help simply by recycling your decks instead of throwing them away!
